Neglect
The most common form of abuse, neglect affects not only young people’s quality of life but their sense of self and self-worth, risk taking behaviours and understanding of relationships. It can lead to enduring problems through adolescence into adulthood. This course explores how neglect impacts on children’s physical and cognitive development, considers how we assess and communicate about neglect and introduces some tools to assess the impact of parental neglect on children.
The Course
On the residential workers’ course we consider how a young person’s history of neglect affects our understanding of their current identity, behaviors and communication, reflect on how we maintain awareness of the young person’s home situation while they are living with us and develop child centered plans that build resilience and life skills going forward.
Meet Your Trainer
Maryine Osmond has over 20 years’ social work experience from work in prison as a Drugs/HIV worker on through to The Children’s Society managing services across Child Sexual Exploitation, Runaway’s & Substance Misuse. In 2013 she gave evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee on localised child grooming. In the same year she was shortlisted for an award by the National Working Group for sexually exploited children (NWG) for her contribution to work with victims. She continues to work locally as a manager in the Young Carers service, meaning her understanding of young people, parents and their needs, staff experience, and the requirement to apply recent and evidenced based research to practice is live and up to date.
