Training

The demands on holding the Registered Manager’s position and the complexity of young people we are supporting is increasing. It’s crucial that Registered Managers, and other people taking a significant role get the support and the training they need to deliver high quality services that really make a difference to young people.

The below courses run over 8 days each, focusing on the specific challenges and practicalities of the role of a Registered Manager in a Children’s Home.  We’ve two separate courses, the first is suitable for those who are new to the role or looking to progress into the Registered Manager’s position within the next 12 months, and the second course has been developed for those more experienced who have held the position for a number of years.

The courses draw on key management principles, regulations and guidance, describes approaches to inspection, day-to-day responsibilities, the development of a strong analytic evidence base about your service and how we create a strong, safe culture in which our young people can thrive.

New and Aspiring Registered Managers Training

It’s a big step up to be a Registered Manager.

This 8-day course with a highly experienced former manager builds managers’ knowledge and skills across key areas of the role, from preparing and maintaining the home’s documentation to building the culture required to lead your team. It’s aimed at Registered Managers in their first year of the role and to deputies and similar being prepared for succession.

In this course, we’ll be covering the following topics at introductory level:

  • Session 1: Key principles of residential care
    The registered managers roles and responsibilities
  • Session 2: Key document session
    SOP, Location Risk Assessment , Young person Guide etc
  • Session 3: Legislation
  • Session 4: All about Ofsted and inspection
  • Session 5: Case study say  – work through a set of case studies to embed practice
  • Session 6: All the R”s  – 40’, 44;s and 45’s
    Workforce development plan and home development plan
  • Session 7: Language that cares and reporting and recording standards
  • Session 8: Learning from history- safer organisations Reflection and action planning

Michelle Nicholson has a 20-year career in Children’s Residential Services working with Children and has previously set up a children’s home after working in long term secure home, a first of it’s kind as a transitional children’s home for young people to move to following their time in a secure children’s home. Michelle has extensive experience of managing inspections and registering homes with Ofsted, with experience in policy writing, management of staff, delivering training and extensive safeguarding knowledge. She also has experience of supporting young people at significant risk of CSE and CCE. Michelle has a history of building strong multiagency care teams to ensure that young people have their needs met and are safe and advocates for young people at every opportunity in supporting them to have their voice heard.

This series of 8 training short days is run online using Zoom. You will receive a link and to a launch page where you will find a set of instructions and course materials.

This course is priced at £995+vat, reduced to £750+vat for members.

Experienced Registered Managers Training

The Registered Manager role is stressful and often it feels all roads lead to our door.

This 8-day course is aimed at individuals already established in the Registered Manager role. Building on the learning from an in-depth survey of 378 leaders and managers, it addresses the key issues leading to burnout and high level of stress. The course explores how we hold the role, work to connect the power and resilience of your organisation, managing the inspection process and key skills development to improve risk management, reflection and performance across your team.

In this course, we’ll be covering the following topics at senior/experienced level:

  • Session 1: Reviewing your role as registered managers, DSL, and roles and responsibilities of the responsible individual.
  • Session 2: Building organisational resilience, Leadership styles and team roles
  • Session 3: The strategic leader, leadership and culture
  • Session 4: Case study day  – work through a set of case studies
  • Session 5: Learning from history- safer organisations and safer recruitment
  • Session 6: Managing the inspection process.
  • Session 7: Managing risks
  • Session 8: Reflective supervision and performance management, Reflection and action planning
